SEVENDUST’S
‘NEXT’ GARNERS HIGH MARKS BY CRITICS
AND SPENDS TWO CONSECUTIVE WEEKS AT #1
ON BILLBOARD’S “TOP INDEPENDENT ALBUMS”
CHART;
HEADLINING
TOUR SET TO LAUNCH
JANUARY 18 IN FT. LAUDERDALE, FL
December 16, 2005
-- Now that their run with Mudvayne as part of “The
Masters of Horror Tour” is coming to a close, Sevendust--Lajon
Witherspoon (vocals), John Connolly (guitar), Vince Hornsby
(bass), Morgan Rose (drums), Sonny Mayo (guitar)—are
gearing up to embark on their own headlining tour in 2006.
After taking a
much-deserved break for the holidays (except for one show
in Orlando, FL at the House of Blues on New Year’s Eve),
the band will criss-cross the U.S. starting January 18 in
Ft. Lauderdale, FL at Revolution in support of their current
studio album, NEXT (WineDark/7Bros Records, distributed
by Fontana Distribution, a division of Universal Music and
Video Distribution). Nonpoint, Socialburn, Wicked Wisdom and
ONE will accompany Sevendust on the trek. The band will be
on the road throughout the year and they’ll eventually
venture outside the U.S. for shows in Canada and Europe.
NEXT has
been receiving rave reviews and wracking up high-powered chart
success. After debuting in the Top 20 on Billboard’s
“Top 200 Albums” chart (the highest debut of the
week for Fontana Distribution), it dominated Billboard’s
“Top Independent Albums” chart in the coveted
#1 slot for two consecutive weeks. The album’s first
single, “Ugly” is currently standing tall at #14
on Radio & Records’ “Active Rock”
chart, while it’s bulleted #14 on Billboard’s
Active Rock chart. The video for “Ugly” is
currently in rotation on FUSE and MTV2.
“The new
record is quintessential Sevendust with the rich melodies
careening over strong, guitar metal.”
--Jared Cobb, Drum!, November 2005
“Sevendust
have partnered with the relatively unknown WineDark on their
latest, and the result sounds rejuvenated, refocused and refreshed…Easily
the group’s best effort since their self-titled debut,
NEXT firmly grounds itself on Southern-tinged riffs and Gospel-inflected
singing from frontman Lajon Witherspoon. Reliable songs such
as ‘Pieces’ and ‘Silence’ mark a return
to vintage Sevendust, while the whole album bursts at the
seams with more hooks than a pirate convention.”
--Amy Sciarretto, CMJ Weekly,
October 17, 2005
“It’s
weird that for a band that has done pretty well for themselves,
we gotta call them under-rated—under-respected by the
underground maybe—but that’s what Sevendust are.
They don’t turn in duds, and there’s always a
lot going on, weird guitar textures, cavernous atmospheres,
killer drum fills, vocal nuttiness.”
--Martin Popoff,
Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles, November 2005
The band has also
been racking up raves for their live performances as well.
As Jeff Inman with the Des Moines Register noted: “Pulling
out everything from late-‘90s classics such as the thundering
‘Denial’ to new material from the band’s
current disc, NEXT, the Atlanta quintet proved that
melody has a place in even the most snarling metal. Blame
frontman Lajon Witherspoon…he can come off like a soul
singer plopped down in the middle of a firefight. It gives
a song like current hit ‘Ugly’ a pop sheen that
the other bands on the bill just couldn’t muster, and
made Sevendust, if not the generals for the night, at least
the show’s heroes.”
Sevendust are
ecstatic to be performing shows for their fans again after
spending the past couple of months making promo appearances
at various radio station events. The band has been chronicling
their experiences on the road in a tour diary on Billboard.com.
As guitarist Sonny Mayo and drummer Morgan Rose chimed in
after the first week: “This tour has been the most fun
for us in years!!! The response has been unreal and we can’t
thank our friends as well as the Mudvayne fans enough for
making us feel welcome!!! After playing some of the hottest
shows in recent memory the first 3 shows we finally got the
temperature below a hundred and fifty degrees when we hit
Chicago. You guys amaze us with your stamina to handle the
heat!!! So far, every night after the show, we’ve been
kickin’ it with the guys in Mudvayne. It’s like
being on tour with family. Some of the guys from 10 Years
& Bobaflex stop in too. Our bus seems to be the official
gathering place for ‘after show festivities.’
It’s been a long time since Sevendust opened for someone
and we have to admit, it’s nice to be able to have time
to hang with everybody and not have to leave 20 minutes after
the show.”
