RAPHAEL
SAADIQ’S ‘ALL HITS AT THE HOUSE OF BLUES’
DEBUTS IN TOP TEN OF
BILLBOARD’S “TOP INDEPENDENT ALBUMS” CHART
October 24, 2003
-- Raphael Saadiq’s ALL HITS AT THE HOUSE OF BLUES has entered
Billboard’s “Top Independent Albums” chart at
#10 having sold over 7,700 copies its first week out.
Quite an impressive feat for one of today’s most respected
R&B artists, especially having recently re-launched his own
Pookie Entertainment label (which is distributed nationally by
the Navarre Corporation) only a few months ago. The 2-disc ALL
HITS AT THE HOUSE OF BLUES live album is the label’s first
release since the critically acclaimed and Grammy® nominated
self-titled album by Lucy Pearl, which came out May 2000 and was
distributed by BMG.
Just like his Grammy® nominated (for “Best R&B Album”)
INSTANT VINTAGE, the live album (which includes a large number
of songs from IV) is garnering immense critical praise. The Orlando
Weekly hailed it as “…another slap-in-your-face confirmation
of his musicianship. ‘All Hits’ basks in the inventive
sound that Tony! Toni! Tone! championed, and surprises abound.
From the hard-hitting rock riff introduced alongside D'Angelo's
falsetto in ‘Be Here’ and a bad-ass performance from
Joi (aka Star Kitty) to the monumental TTT reunion of that night,
this is the best of Saadiq, and the only thing you'll regret is
that you weren't there in person.” While Launch.com concluded:
“One casualty of hip-hop's rise has been the live R&B
album. The few concert recordings that surfaced over the past
several years have largely been sterile affairs reflecting their
DAT-dominated era. This two-disc recounting of Raphael Saadiq’s
appearance at the Los Angeles House of Blues in July 2003 is different;
it ebbs, it flows, and most importantly, it breathes, blowing
out the deliciously greasy scent of funk made the old-fashioned
way, with guitar, bass, drums and quality songwriting.”
In other news, Raphael continues to lend his renown production
and songwriting expertise to numerous artists currently making
waves in the R&B world. For instance, “For Life,”
“Still In Us” and “Progress” can now be
heard on Nappy Roots’ WOODEN LEATHER album, “She’s
Got The Love” and “Falling Out” from Calvin
Richardson’s debut 2:35pm album is out now, and “Glow,”
“Marathon” and “Harlem Streets” from Kelis’
TASTY album is due out December 9. More songs written and produced
by Raphael will also soon be featured on new albums by Earth,
Wind & Fire, D’Angelo, Faith Evans, Nikka Costa, Sunshine
Anderson and many others.
